Meanwhile trouble was brewing on board the ship Exodus, which had just made its way out into the middle of the ocean. Captain Nine-tails Johnson and the Shadow Master Borago sat around the table inside the Captain’s cabin and Flinders stood by the door awaiting orders. In the centre of the table were the emerald crystal ball and a small sack of gold.

“I call upon the Witches of the Well,” Borago commanded.

A green mist began to grow and swirl from within the globe followed by the usual cackling and giggling.

“Oh, I have never been on a ship before Master,” Marelda said looking around; her face pressed against the ball with enthusiasm.

“What is thy bidding Master?” Hemmatia asked as she gradually appeared.

“You will tell me where I can find the Illuminata Rose.”

“She is not far from these waters, we’d say in the realm of Sirenuse, but we cannot give an exact...”

“Yes, I know, because of her damn crystal,” Borago grunted.

“My advice would be to,” Hemmatia began.

“Hunt her down, yes, great idea sister,” Marelda dimly piped up.

Hemmatia cast a spell on her impertinent sister by sealing Marelda’s mouth temporarily shut, then carried on. “First you must use the curse of a thousand deaths; it will track her down like an eagle to its prey,” Hemmatia suggested. “After which head for the coast of Sirenuse and release it on the shores of Coral Bay.”

“But I need her alive, besides which I had planned to use the curse as a lethal weapon for the final battle,” Borago said through gritted teeth.

“Just instruct it to bring her safely to you,” Hemmatia continued. “But hurry the Illuminata does not stay in one place for long.” The two hags disappeared like smoke, deep in the crystal ball.

The Pirate King had caught every word of the conversation still none the wiser.

“Captain, weigh anchor at Port Oreon, I have some work to do,” Borago instructed grabbing his staff and walking back onto the deck.

“Cracking cannons! But we’ve only just left,” Captain Nine-tails demanded waving his arms around so vigorously, that he struck a fellow privateer with his nine-tail whip, as he exited the cabin.

“I have wasted enough time here, I’ll be back in a few days to meet you at the port with the curse,” Borago said whistling for his gryphon. “You have your first sack of gold now stick to the plan.”

“Mr Flinders, give orders to head back to Port Oreon,” the Captain barked rubbing his face in frustration. “What’s this curse then?”

“You’ll see,” Borago said secretly as the magnificent winged creature picked up his master with a giant claw and flew in the direction of his lair.
